The small VW hatchback – the Polo has thus far managed to avoid being molested by Volkswagens R GmbH division when it comes to an extreme version. News in is that VW are looking to line up the Polo model for a Wold Rally Championship car to add to its existing line up. The problems have mainly been that it has been hard to put a case for the additional costs of developing a high performance model of the small car mainly due to the current economic climate but it appears that the German car giant have had a change of mind. At its launch of a mock up model the Volkswagen Polo WRC had the look of the R model and appeared to be badged up as the Polo R WRC which possibly leads the way for a production model based upon its success. This wont be due until 2013 though and will use a further modified version of the 1.4 litre turbo/supercharged option they have at present to take the total power above the existing GTI 177 bhp to over 200bhp. At this stage its thought that four wheel drive wont be on the car but with further development of the upcoming Audi S1 it could well be an area that Volkswagen look into.
